"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." Theologian, philosopher and physician Albert Schweitzer knew quite a bit about success and being successful. He followed his passions throughout his life, including a trek to Africa to serve as a doctor of medicine to those most in need. His wife, who had trained as a nurse, set out with him to what was then French Equatorial Africa, better known today as Gabon. The year was 1917. Schweitzer had only become a doctor four years earlier, but his desire to become a mission doctor was strong. On his arrival on the banks of the Ogowe River, he built a hospital and equipped it using his own money. He was arrested as an enemy alien of Germany and briefly interned as a prisoner of war during World War I. Released a year later, he turned his attention to his philosophy of reverence for all life, which he believed was central to the survival of civilization. His seminal work, Philosophy of Civilization, was completed in 1923. Many of Albert Schweitzer quotes are well known today, but perhaps not known as widely as "Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." He eventually returned to Africa, by the way, as well as the hospital he had founded. It had moved two miles up river, but was still carrying on the important work Dr. Schweitzer had begun years before.
